⚠️ Your entries and images are stored locally on your device and we cannot access or read them. You are responsible for backups!
If you've installed Offline Journal, a fully offline edition of Simple Journal, then the app does not have internet permission and cannot collect or share anything.
If enabled, data is synced directly from your device to an application folder in your Google Drive. You can manage this folder through Drive's web ui (cog icon > settings > manage apps)
A hash, file size, and timestamp of the original file may be stored as cleartext metadata with encrypted files.
Sync may keep a varying amount of obsolete datafiles that are no longer needed both in Drive and locally before they get pruned permanently. The intention here is to have additional backups of the datafiles if there ever is a bug in sync. The way to remove these files on demand, if absolutely needed, would be to 1. export your data 2. clear app data both on device and in drive 3. import back data. Obviously this comes with some inherent risk and is *not* recommended.
We do not have access to this folder or any other data in your Drive.
The app does not have access to anywhere else in your Drive, except for the application folder specific to Simple Journal. You need to grant this permission as part of the setup process for sync.
We collect error and crash reports through Crashlytics on the basis of legitimate interest to improve and keep up quality.
These reports may contain technical data, technical details of the device, minimal amount of usage information or statistics (e.g. how many entries you have in total), and information on non-sensitive settings, app state, purchases, and possibly unique identifiers. Great care is taken to make sure nothing sensitive gets included.
These reports are absolutely crucial for keeping up quality and the user experience anywhere close to as great as it can be. Vast majority of people would never report a crash let alone smaller error cases, and the app would just be super buggy and close to unusable without them.
We may choose to collect app usage data using Google Analytics or similar service(s) in order to better understand usage patterns, for example which features of our product(s) are being used and which ones could be removed, or which of the alternate configurations of the app or app settings lead to e.g. better user retention.
Basis for collection, if we choose to collect app activity data, is legitimate interest to improve our product(s) and the user experience.
As part of usage analytics we may choose to use Google Firebase or a similar service for providing alternate configurations of the app. This is used for A/B testing features and configurations.
Simple Journal will never send your entries or identifiable personal data anywhere outside of your device (unless you enable sync, in which case you should see the corresponding section on Drive Sync above)
Some parts of our service may utilise third party service providers such as Google Cloud and Amazon AWS for server capacity and website hosting.
As mentioned above we utilise Crashlytics for crash and error reports and may use Google Analytics and Google Firebase services for usage analytics. Crashlytics, Google Analytics, and Firebase are services provided by Google: https://policies.google.com/privacy
We try to keep the amount of third party libraries and services to a bare minimum and in general would prefer to use services offered by Google.
It is possible that some of the information is processed outside of the country where you reside in.
We only collect a bare minimum of data. For clarity, we do not collect anything that could be considered sensitive such as entries, images, word counts, journal names, search strings, or anything otherwise unrelated to our products. These are not collected.
Any data collected by error or usage analytics is anonymous in nature
